News About Jeff LatasThe Green Valley News published a guest opinion piece about Jeff on September 10, 2006. "If we all look deeply within ourselves," wrote Richard Baker, "and make our vote a matter of conscience, I think the great majority will want to vote for that candidate who is best qualified to bring an end to the impasse or morass that we are presently in. For Democrats, I think that Jeff Latas is that person. He is a retired Air Force officer and fighter pilot with a stellar war record. He has also served in the Pentagon and has had first-hand knowledge of the status of WMD inspections. He knows what he is talking about. When listening to him speak, I became convinced that he is a person of truth, integrity, and insight—the kind of person we urgently need in Congress." Read the story. Conservative talk show host Emil Franzi interviewed Jeff on KJLL on December 10. On December 21, Franzi wrote about Jeff in the Explorer. "The only Democrat running so far capable of winning the seat is glossed over and called 'the retired Air Force pilot,'" Franzi writes. "He's not just 'a retired pilot,' he's a genuine war hero...He's intelligent, personable and knowledgeable about issues, standing generally to the left of most of the mushmouthed centrists he's running against in the Democrat primary...Oro Valley's Jeff Latas is a nightmare for those Republicans who are smart enough to 'read a battle.' ...he'll have plenty of appeal to the left of center Democrat primary voters in CD8...Latas isn't afraid to tackle issues....He's not saying much a regular liberal Democrat can argue with and he says it well...I'll go on a limb right now and call Latas the winner of the CD8 Democrat primary. On behalf of the Republican I will probably vote for, I hope I'm wrong...In the meantime, Jeff, thank you for your service. America was a better country when more folks from both major parties running for stuff had proudly worn our uniform." Read the article here.

Salette Latas speaks truth to power following President Bush's televised admission on December 17, 2005 that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but that anyone who spoke out about ending the invasion was a defeatist. "Not a single 9-11 terrorist was from Iraq," she said. She described how her son, Jesse, "shared the [med evac] plane to Germany with 52 severely-wounded Americans, many of them missing limbs, many of them with severe injuries, and when he got to Germany, we asked him how he felt and he said lucky, and he said he wanted to go back, because he wanted to be with his buddies and he wanted to finish the job. That's the caliber of American spirit and American talent that we're squandering over there." Watch a clip or read more.
